The Speed of Sight

1. The theme I am exploring is ‘The Speed of Sight”. The speed of sound and the speed of light can be measured, but sight cannot. The speed of sight is unknown and possibly non-existent, making it interesting and mysterious. It is something that is rarely explored, and I thought it was a unique idea. There could be countless ways of portraying it, and I had a specific idea of how I was going to do it.

2. One element of design I used in my composition is size. The eye at the end of the road is much larger than everything else in the composition. The main focus of the picture is the eye, which is much larger than everything else in the composition. All of the large images are the focuses of the composition. The speedometer is also large, drawing focus towards it as well. Everything else is in the background and consists of smaller figures. Another element of design I used in my composition is color. Color is used to draw attention towards the focal point, which is the eye. The background image of the highway is relatively dull, so color is used to liven up the image. A principal of design I used is contrast. I used contrast in my composition between the dark road and the colorful lines added along the road. The dark road is contrasted with the blue, red and green blotches added to the road. I focused on contrast because the contrast makes it so that the eye focuses on certain elements of the composition. Another principal of design I used in my composition is unity. The lines added along the road look as if they belong there. The eye looks as though it belongs at the end of the highway and that the road leads to the eye. I focused on unity because I wanted it to look like everything belonged where it was and that it made sense to be where it is.

Pop Art Summative Questions

Andy Warhol

Andy Warhol was born in Pittsburgh with the name Andrew Warhola. When he moved to New York to pursue his career as a commercial artist, after a newspaper spelled his name “Warhol”, he decided to remove the ‘a’ from his last name. A lady who worked with a shoe designing company recognized Warhol’s unique and interesting style of art, and hired him to design shoes. He had the reputation as one of New York’s top commercial artists, and did work for magazines, designing department store window displays, as well as working for other well known companies. In 1961, Warhol made his first “pop” paintings based on comics and ads. In 1962, he released his Campbell’s Soup Cans series, and he was instantly declared a celebrity. Warhol took an interest in Hollywood, and was interested in doing portraits of celebrities. His first individual art show was in 1962, and it was an instant hit. There was a line outside of the building waiting to see his art, and everything sold out very fast. In 1963, Warhol also began to make films. He was the first one to use video as a form of art. His films were considered odd by some, such as his film entitled Sleep, which shows nothing but a man sleeping for six hours. Andy Warhol also worked with musicians on their album covers such as The Rolling Stones, and most famously The Velvet Underground. Andy Warhol said that one of his big influences was when he was younger, he enjoyed tracing and copying magazine pictures, and a picture of Shirley Temple was his favourite. Warhol’s art was the first of its kind, and once his art was released, it was as if a new era had started. Warhol was the first to take commercial objects and images and portray them as art. After Warhol’s paintings and art, people began to discuss the question “What is art?” more. Artists widened their variety of art and expanded on their idea of what art was. Andy Warhol started a completely new type of art based on simple pictures and images, and he influenced and inspired many artists of his era, and many of the current era as well.

Photographic Formative 3 Color and Shape

This is a picture that I took of a fruit bowl in my house. Colour is portrayed very much in this photo through the different fruit colours and how they accent and contrast eachother. The green apples are more of a cold colour, and the bananas and red apples and tomatoe are more warm colours, which creates a nice contrast. The bowl also has many colours painted into it. Shape is portrayed in the photo using the different shapes of the fruits. Each of the fruits have a different shape and size. The apples and tomatoe are sphere-like shapes, whereas the bananas are cylindrical-like shapes. The bowl containing the fruit is a half-sphere like shape.

Photographic Formative 2 Texture

This is a totem pole-like wooden carving that I have in my room. Texture is portrayed in this image with the lines going in different directions and angles. The lines make the mask look as if there are different depths into the wood, and if you were to run your fingers along it, you would feel texture.

Photographic Formative 1 Line

This picture I took while I was in Italy over the summer. From our hotel, looking over the balcony, there was a long row of motorized scooters all down the street. This was the case for many streets in Italy because motorized scooters are one of the main types of transportation there. In this instance, all the scooters are parallel lines. Each individual scooter is a horizontal line across the picture. Since they are all lined up like this, it creates a verticle line going up the picture plane. There are also pilars on the left hand side of the picture plane, which are diagonal lines from the angle the picture has been taken. This is an effective exploration of line because there are many lines going in several directions and it shows how this arrangement of motorized scooters is quite common in the Italian culture.
